Don't You Believe It! / Week 1 in Sketches 2014

So it's January, and although I'm a couple of weeks later than anticipated, I'd like to announce that I'm back in the saddle again - artistically, creatively, socially and as visibly as you will allow. The last year and a half or so has been incredibly difficult, and at some point I might even share the complicated details publicly. This would be an attempt to throw myself out there, warts and all, but hey ... not quite up to that warty reality yet, if I'll ever be. Those of you who know me might say I hold my cards close... and so I will continue to do with matters I deem unsuitable for public consumption. But see, I'm also learning that sharing is an awfully good thing, even when you perceive you're putting yourself at risk to do so. I think... I think I've learnt, that often the opposite happens ... connectedness, help, support, encouragement. So suffice it to say, for now, that I've tasted a little bit of hell, if not danced with the devil. And though I'd like to say I've been to hell and back, those lines are often blurred. Still.
Fortunately, for me, a cornered mouse DOES fight.

Soooo ... I'm not usually one for New Year's Resolutions, but I made one this year, and it is one I intend to keep. I will make a sketch or some sort of drawing or artistic idea in a book -- one for each day of the year. It goes without saying that sometimes I'll love them, and sometimes I'll hate them enough to want to rip the pages out. I mean, who will know anyhow? Well you will, because I'm going to post them here...love 'em or hate 'em.

So here goes! -- Sketches from 1st January to 11th January 2014. I'll post sketches from this week tomorrow night.

Might have posted this yesterday, but Dan had to see it first!

one mouse / two birds

This painting
I've been thinking about for
a while
has been listed on etsy. In the end, it didn't want to be filled with any more colour, but it did want a lick of varnish and to be inhabited by some three tiny creatures. Late this afternoon a little mouse and two lovely birds decided to move in.

colours in the night

In the middle of the night my mind started ticking again. I thought of squares of colour, extracting them from photos, drawing around the colours in themes. Shapes and lines. unidentified text. Disconnected thoughts, in and out of sleep. Exciting. I'm pleased with my achievement this morning. Seems small, but I know it isn't.

one learning curve

Just a very simple idea, but man am I excited that my favourite monkey in the world (aka: mischievo) got me past the Adobe Illustrator wrapping of text! Yup, super simple, but if you don't know YOU DON'T KNOW! No, this isn't a final logo, a final bird or really a final anything. It's just the simplest idea that was right at the top of my head (including the colour circles from my sleepless hours). I could be wrong, but I'm finding Illustrator slightly counter-intuitive at the moment. In other words, ALL NEW and seemingly very little previous knowledge helps me out. Never mind! In a way, it's like a new adventure. I have lots of ideas in my head for prints etc. and I have the distinct feeling that finding my way through this forest might pay dividends. I could have done those little half-circles all night long... but my eyes are about to pop out of my head so I better not. ** I just realised the line below the circles is still there which I meant to remove. Soooo time for bed! :P

a plate too small ...

... has resulted in an as yet unidentified creature.

Paint, research, varnish, blog, draw, design, felt, cook, clean, whistle dixie ... perhaps I had too much on my plate today. To the left is a little jot I did while thinking of a possible logo. In the middle of the night when I should have been sleeping, I imagined three circles of colour under a bird - turquoise blues, olive greens and ochre hues seem to be recurring at the moment.
Wa-hey! What do you reckon I'm gonna be??
What the... not sure I'm liking this...
Suppose I'll just have to be patient to find out.
Let's hope no one sees me in this state.

shapes to come

This is one of those times where I probably wouldn't have done a blog post, as the thoughts in my head are awfully jumbled, and my morning, although having done a lot of things needing doing, wasn't particularly fun. Last night I did this rough outline of some shapes (very housescapey shapes), and in a lot of ways it encompasses how I'm feeling. There's a foundation there, and I'm building on it, but the guts of it are a bit unknown. That's the scary part, but also the fun part. When I look at this outline I now see possibilities. So, without realising it when I started this post, I've just formed a pretty strong visual symbol. I had planned on talking about some other things I've been mulling over today, and I've already erased further evaluations of the shapes and structure above, but I think best now to leave things be.

goals of the day

My 3 main goals today were:
  • wake up early to get a head start on creativity - I think 6:30ish is early enough on my day off from the day job, don't you?
  • start, finish and list a new painting - seemed like a tall order, but I did it! Part of my self-imposed rule was that I couldn't just list anything to achieve my goal. I had to actually like the result. Mission accomplished! English Housescape #2 below. Phew!

  • read - somewhere between my first couple of rounds on the painting and taking a shower (I think it must have been about 1), I grabbed my Haruki Murakami (now on page 530 of 1Q84 Book One & Two), cozied up under the covers in bed and read until I felt like dozing off, which I happily did! The only thing about having a cat-nap after reading Murakami is that I'm almost guaranteed to have a freaky dream.
**felt something** - this was a fall-back goal that was only required if I was feeling like I wasn't going to have any chance of completing the painting goal. As it turns out, that wasn't an issue! The good thing about this fall-back was I was up for felting a bit throughout the day so it felt like I was choosing between two really desirable activities.
    •  Note to self: give myself a get-out plan with another creative activity in case motivation is lacking in one or unexpected technical hurdles arrive.
Random discovery of the day - If you put a price in your pin description on Pinterest it automatically creates a little corner sash on the pin with the price displayed! So I guess they are all for promoting 'sale' items. I found out by accident because I was mentioning the exorbitant price of this lovely Crystal Bud Chandelier which is indeed gorgeous, but at a daunting cost of $2000! I'll have to sell a lot of paintings to achieve that goal!

early morning paint

Yesterday was my second day of waking up earlier to try to get stuff done before the day job. Sadly, I had no internet when I awoke because we've just changed servers and Dan hadn't figured out how to get it up and working in my room yet. Slightly discouraging with my foggy head first thing in the morning, but then I saw my paints sitting by my computer. I haven't done one of my house-scapes in ages, but without thinking it was what I started to paint. And then, there it was...

I got a fair bit of it done yesterday, and then added some sky colour etc. this morning. Not sure if it's done yet,
but probably pretty close if not.

Last night, still no internet until quite late, I played around very quickly with some shapes and colours. I kind of like the result:

I think this morning business might work out for me.
Problem is, now I'm out of time and want to keep painting!

bunny up a tree

Today I have no excuses. Today is the day to make something... and make it special. No pressure... you know the drill...

It started like this, but without the paints and other supplies. Imagine a pile of books where the palette is and the lamp moved down onto the table where the paints are. I had all my painting stuff downstairs in what would be our dining room, (except we rarely use it as that or at all), and I realised that I really didn't feel inspired to paint down there. Whether that is a constant thing remains to be seen. Today I thought it best to bring some stuff up where I did feel inspired. When I woke up this morning I was thinking of colour swatches or colour blocks. Over my cup of tea I started imagining a few stripes of a similar hue. The first colours that seemed to jump out at me were the blues. Once I started the stripes seemed a bit, well... meh. So I added a circle.

...and then a few other shapes and stripes,
and an oval in the circle...

...which eventually became, well... a BUNNY and the swatches became TREES. The thing I love about the result is that I didn't plan any of it other than a vague idea of strips of colour. I love that the bunny and trees came naturally.

After I was nearly finished I took the above photo. I still had let the painting dry a bit more and remove it from the block of paper. Then I decided to try something I hadn't before (and perhaps was a bit hasty). I varnished it with a poster and watercolour varnish that I bought ages ago for another potential project that I never started (this is the vast back-burner I keep alluding to). It worked almost a treat. One problem was I think I laid it on too thick so it soaked through the paper a bit and left some darker marks. Fortunately, I was able to cut these off and still maintain a decent shape to the paper. Secondly, in my haste I used a fine brush to brush the varnish on, and it kept leaving little hairs that I had to scrape off. Again, just a silly move on my part, but I don't think it affected the final result much (save for that little piece of fuzz I just noticed... hm). The effect of the varnish is really nice though, leaving a nice gloss over the painted bits and a sort of lustre finish over the bare paper. I'm definitely excited about that.

So here's what I'm calling the 'almost final piece'. That's because this photo doesn't really do it justice. I must figure out how to take a decent pic of something like this. I guess I can fall back on different monitors produce different colours anyhow, but to my eye and with my monitor, the colours are SO much more rich and vibrant in reality than on the screen. Never mind. You get the point. The size is roughly 3.75in square, but not a perfect square. I was thinking about putting this up for sale in my shop and/or more like it. Any thoughts?

I really must get a scanner...

granny square #1 & new year mini-babble

Not the best it could be, but certainly not the worst! After two flub attempts, (and I'm still not entirely sure there's anything wrong with the second one), this is what I've ended up with. I think once I get my stitches more uniform and consistent that will make a lot of difference. All in all, I'm pretty happy.

New year? (okay, well a fortnight in, but whatever) New attempt at blogging. I'm going to try to stop myself, well... stopping myself. Without going into the numerous reasons I might do this either consciously or subconsciously, I will just announce here and now that I will make a genuine attempt not to... even if I seem to have nothing of substance to say or desire to babble on with streams of consciousness that may ensure anyone following will cease to do so.

Onwards and upwards.

Pin Pals Update!

This is a follow up from my original on August 7th  HERE!

I was contacted by Deanna at Pin Pals with an email entitled "bad news"! Never a good sign. Appparently I didn't get an updated template that they are now using! I couldn't just copy and paste my last designs because the template was a lot smaller than this one, so the they would have looked like tiny specks on the pins! I've gone at it again, and because of the bigger space allowed, a bit more of the animals could appear. I did really like the first ones, but I like these ones as much! I lost the dog/wolf (sorry Nicole! ) if only because the lines were so faint. I thought it best that they all looked relatively consistent with each other. I really hope that Moo! Deer's feet don't get cut off on the bottom... but I'm pretty sure it was within the space, and it's already sent!

Pin Pals Submission

I got an email reminding me that the submission deadline for the Pin Pals Art Show is the 13th of August. I signed up for this ages ago and am so glad they reminded me because I definitely would have missed it. It was my original intention to put some mini photos on the template, but I couldn't quite figure out how to do this quickly and effectively with my simple Photoshop skills. Sooo... I reverted to my graphic tablet drawings again and am really happy with the results. I kind of wish I didn't use the wolf/dog with coloured feathers because he looks a lot lighter than the others, but never mind! I already submitted them! Check out what Pin Pals is all about on their website: HERE

Here's my submission!

Let me know what you think!

One of my designs will be featured
and hopefully sold at an art show at Gallery 5 in Richmond, Virginia this coming September. The sales will benefit Art 180, a charity providing art-related programs for underprivileged children. The other four designs will be mixed up with designs of all the other participants and I will get four random pins back from other people. Fun!
You can check out all of the submissions at the Pin Pals Art Show gallery on Flickr HERE. I find it more fun to look deeper into the photostream where they picture the submitted sets in one photo each...

Bookie Indulgence, Creative Allowance & Botanical Wonder

On Tuesday I treated myself to British Printmaker Angie Lewin's Plants and Places, which I've been drooling over for nearly 9 months.

Every time I thought I'd decided to indulge and buy it, I've talked myself out of it (telling myself it was because of the price -- it retails at £25.00). I almost talked myself out of it again this week, but when flipping through the pages I got that sudden and surprisingly unexpected spark of creative inspiration, like a lightening flash of "what if?" and jittery positive anticipation that I've gotten before with this very book. I've told myself for a considerable amount of time that one, (which, incidentally, I often have to remind myself also includes ME), must pay attention to these little signs... they point us in the right direction.
That spark of inspiration?
... it's the equivalent of star dust and worth its weight in gold.

When I first saw Plants and Places it also caused me a bit of worry, as odd as that sounds. For quite a long time I've noticed the minutiae of botanical shapes and structures that surround me. I'd been taking more and more close-up shots and found it hard to walk anywhere without bending down for a closer look at this little bud or that little stem, the intricate structures and forms that can be observed and enjoyed when you bother to look a bit closer.

These are some photos I took. I have loads in my archives, but these are some that I bothered to put up on flickr.

I had bought a book about the wildflowers of Britain and Ireland to learn a bit more and attempted to draw and paint the shapes that I saw in some sort of structural way, with a larger, yet undeveloped project or series of projects in mind. Then I found Plants and Places. I saw some similar ideas that I had been trying to put down on paper, some things that had been dancing around in my imagination and it hit me. I worried slightly, (as I know other people surely experience too), that it might appear I formed my original ideas from Lewin's developed work. The thing that seems silly to me now is that no one could see what was in my mind's eye anyhow, and my materialized ideas didn't necessary reflect what I was thinking yet! I don't know for sure, but I wonder if the flagging and ultimately burying of these infant artistic ideas was the result of this self-inflicted judgement and worry? Instead of using Lewin's gorgeous work as fresh inspiration and a perhaps a sort of validation of some great ideas of my own, I let it stunt me. Is it possible? Definitely possible, I think. So I've bought the book now, and couldn't be happier. Onwards and upwards!

These are some of the things I was working on at the time. They were not an end result, but developing ideas... but I certainly felt like I was headed somewhere.

And then... I saw THIS amazing book two days ago and gasped at how beautiful it looked before I even realized what it was about!

I read the subtitle: Mrs. Delany {begins her life's work} at 72  -- and of course I was compelled to look closer. Inside are 35 rich, full-colour botanical illustrations and inside the front cover reads:

"...(she) picked up a pair of scissors and, at the age of seventy-two, created a new art form, mixed-media collage. Over the next decade, Mrs. Delany created an astonishing 985 botanically correct, breathtaking cut-paper flowers, now housed in the British Museum and referred to as the Flora Delanica."

More inspiration, more star dust...
... oh, and in the very near future, a little trip to the British Museum.

Just got notice that Indie Cindy in Leeds is officially opened, and carrying some of my products! If anyone out there wants to physically (or virtually) pop by to show your support, please do so!

Indie Cindy is the brainchild of one very sweet Rowan Grant, of Kitschen Sink, who contacted me a couple of months ago via Etsy. She asked if I would be interested in stocking some of my items in her brand new shop. The more I heard about what she was doing, the more I wanted to be a part of it!

Breaking news: First Amigurumi Head!

And if I do say so myself ... NOT TOO SHABBY! With some help from Alicia at Hook and Needles and Annie Obaachan's Super Cute I've managed to make a relatively solid and uniform head (also known as a ball) of some yet unidentifiable animal! It's a bit bigger than I expected, but that's something I can figure out with materials I hope. I've stuffed it with bona fide British wool. No polyester here! (Truth be told because I don't have any, and I have enough wool lying around to construct a full-sized sheep.) Weeee!

It's a bird, a plane, a... head? | my hallway
